I love its ambiguity. We never find out what really happened between them, who was abandoned and who was deserted, just that it hurt a lot then and still does now. I also love the marine imagery, especially that repeated phrase, "in you everything sank!" It's so true of love: there's something hopeless, helpless, and tragic, yet sweet, soothing, and fresh about giving oneself over to someone else, letting oneself be carried on the waves of love.
